WhatsApp is in the process of creating a new functionality that would enable iPhone users to back up their chats, photos, videos, and documents directly to WhatsApp’s cloud storage. This development offers an alternative to the existing reliance on Apple’s iCloud for backup services.
The new feature is expected to include 2GB of free cloud storage for these backups. For users who require more space, additional storage may be available through paid plans, with the entry-level option potentially providing 50GB. Furthermore, plans with higher storage capacities are reportedly being developed to cater to varying user needs.
Importantly, this feature is designed to be optional, with iCloud still serving as the default backup service for iPhone users. Those opting for WhatsApp’s cloud storage will retain the flexibility to revert to iCloud whenever they choose. Notably, backups stored in WhatsApp’s cloud are anticipated to come with end-to-end encryption as a default setting, ensuring the secure protection of user data.
Currently, this feature is undergoing testing via Apple’s TestFlight platform, and there has been no official announcement regarding when it will be publicly available. Additionally, reports suggest that WhatsApp is working on developing a similar cloud backup option for Android users, highlighting an expansion in backup solutions across different operating systems.
