Trump Dismisses Tech-Driven Peace Proposals, Ceasefire with Iran in Jeopardy

by admin477351

Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire with Iran is precarious, describing it as being on “life support.” He is contemplating the reinitiation of U.S. Navy escorts for ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to counteract the Iranian blockade of this crucial maritime passage.

In dismissing Iran’s peace proposals, Trump referred to them as “stupid” and rejected any suggestion that he faces domestic pressure to negotiate a deal. Discussing the ceasefire that has been in place since April 7, Trump remarked, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us—I didn’t even finish reading it.” He further likened the situation to a medical scenario, saying the ceasefire is on “massive life support” with minimal chances of survival.

Recently, the U.S. presented Iran with a series of conditions primarily focused on curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Iran’s weekend counter-proposals were swiftly dismissed by Trump. The president had previously halted “Project Freedom,” a plan to escort oil tankers through the strait, after just two days, ostensibly to allow Iran time to respond to his peace initiatives. This military escort plan had also faced opposition from Saudi Arabia, which refused to permit its airspace or bases to support what it viewed as an escalatory measure.

Trump’s latest remarks came in the wake of a surge in oil prices, spurred by Iran’s statement that further discussions to end the Hormuz blockade would not proceed unless the U.S. acceded to its demands. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, asserted that there would be no further negotiations “as long as the war on all fronts is not over, sanctions are not lifted, blocked funds are not released, war damages are not compensated, and Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz is not recognized.”
