A federal judge has mandated the Trump administration to disclose details regarding the architects behind a proposed $1.8 billion fund. This fund was intended to compensate individuals who alleged they were victims of political prosecution. The directive came from U.S. Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis amidst a lawsuit challenging the establishment of the fund. Democracy Forward initiated this legal action on behalf of several plaintiffs, including a former federal prosecutor and a college professor acquitted of charges linked to a protest against an immigration raid.
Last month, the Justice Department announced that the fund had been abandoned. Todd Blanche, a former Justice Department official, affirmed that the fund was no longer active and had never been operational. The compensation program was originally conceived from a settlement involving former President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service. However, critics contended that this arrangement could have allowed compensation for those prosecuted in relation to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, among others.
The proposed fund met with opposition from lawmakers across party lines, including Republican senators. There were concerns among critics about whether the administration might attempt to revive the program despite its abandonment. Additionally, in a separate ruling in July, a federal judge determined that Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS lacked a legitimate legal issue and was utilized to establish the settlement framework that led to the proposed fund.
Former President Trump expressed disappointment over the discontinuation of the program, stating his belief that some individuals had been treated unjustly. The recent court order may shed light on the origins of the proposed fund and explore the possibility of pursuing compensation through alternative avenues.
