The Domino Theory: How a Lack of Lead Blockbusters Affects the Entire Slate

by admin477351

The domino theory is in effect at the box office this fall, as the lack of a lead blockbuster threatens to slow the momentum of the entire slate. A strong lead, like the recent hit Weapons ($148.8 million worldwide), can create a chain reaction of excitement that benefits all films in the market.
A true tentpole film, like the massive $828 million hit Jurassic World Rebirth, is the first and largest domino. Its success creates media buzz, drives people to theaters, and exposes them to trailers for other films, helping to knock over the next domino in the chain.
Without that first big domino, the entire line is less likely to fall. The smaller films on the fall slate, while potentially excellent, will have to generate their own momentum without the benefit of a market energized by a massive hit. This makes their path to profitability much more challenging.
The industry is looking to Tron: Ares to be the next big domino. Its release in October is expected to set off a new chain reaction, creating a powerful wave of momentum that will carry through the holiday season and lift the entire slate of blockbusters, from Zootopia 2 to Mortal Kombat II.
