Amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine, Russia has accused the United States of abandoning its role as a neutral mediator in the conflict resolution process. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking in Moscow, criticized the U.S. for allegedly increasing pressure on Russia through sanctions rather than facilitating impartial negotiations. This statement follows a decision by G7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to intensify economic measures against Russia, particularly targeting its energy sector.
Since his return to office in 2025, President Trump has been attempting to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv. However, these diplomatic efforts have hit an impasse, largely due to Ukraine’s refusal to accommodate Russian demands. These demands include territorial concessions, military restrictions, and limitations on Western support. The stalled negotiations underscore the complex and contentious nature of achieving peace in the region.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced concerns over Europe’s increased military spending and defense initiatives, which he claims are indicative of preparations for conflict with Russia. Putin reiterated Russia’s stance that Ukraine should withdraw from the eastern Donbas area, highlighting ongoing military operations in the region. He mentioned that Russian forces are nearing the capture of the strategically significant city of Kostiantynivka.
Putin also accused Ukraine and its Western allies of orchestrating attacks on Russian infrastructure to destabilize the country internally. The conflict, which escalated into a full-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022, has led to significant human suffering, with hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions displaced. Despite numerous international diplomatic efforts, a peace agreement remains elusive.
